ADELE MOSONYI
I was born in the UK in 1955. My parents were musicians who met in Paris, my mother was from the UK and my father was from Hungary. They immigrated to the USA and settled in NYC, where I spent my childhood surrounded by musicians and artists. Modernist aesthetics was a key factor in my artistic education and colour was a central concern right from the start.
After teenhood in the UK, I came to Paris to study Philosophy and History of Art at Nanterre University, followed by Drawing and Painting at the Paris Beaux Arts Academy. I have been in the Paris area since 1973 and taken part in many local artistic events, as well as several major international art fairs.
In recent years most of my solo shows have focused on female icons, some taken from real life, others borrowed from folklore, fable, mythology or prehistoric art. Whether my characters emerge from real life or fantasy, they are never portrayed realistically. My work is both Abstract and Figurative, a sort of synthesis between Symbolism, Surrealism and Chromatic Pop.
I love staging my characters in chromatic compositions that can convey emotions and tell a story. For me colour composition is similar to musical composition. The musicality of colours has guided me ever since childhood. Every single colour combination has its own particular tonality which will enable a painting to vibrate and come to life. Together with the use of certain fundamental forms and symbols borrowed from primal arts, my characters can connect with viewers from anywhere in the world.
